"What is a story before it becomes words", Ruth Ozeki asks? What is a feeling before it touches language? What happens in the space between a thought becoming an idea? Between a moment becoming a memory? Between something forgotten and something remembered?
Where and what is inspiration before we know to call it that? Before we know we've received it? When it leaves without us realizing it and we have to find it again?
It sounds like a koan. And maybe it is. Maybe it's the sound of one hand clapping. Maybe it's your face before your mother was born. Maybe it's nothing. Maybe it's everything. I don't know for sure. I don't know what it is.
All I know is that it's what I'm trying to get to with every piece I make. Some place on the periphery of names and phrases. On the out skirts of designation. Just beyond what we can say.
P.S. ICAD - Day 174 - 177
Those collages are absolutely beautiful and mysteriously beyond words!
Stunning work, I love every one of them. The world always in advance really grabbed me, though!
