Last week, I tried something new. I sent out something I'm tentatively calling a Collage Paper Playlist; a collection of songs I've made collages to. I enjoyed it so much, I decided it's something I'd like to continue. Below you'll find this week's playlist:
And in case you don't have Spotify, there are youtube links to each individual song just for you.
get over it
"Higher" - Sea Girls.
After last week's playlist went out,
sent me a few songs to add to my creative soundtrack. This isn't one of the songs, but it is by one of the same artists.Last week, I was obsessed with The Wonder Years, this week it's Sea Girls.
The art here is interesting. It's a collection of leftovers and mistakes from something else I was trying to make. I was experimenting with trying to Xerox my phone screen. The experiment wasn't successful for my intended purposes, but I still managed to find a place to use it.
don't ask me how I am
"Fine, Great" - Modern Baseball
If I've ever given you the impression that I am, in any way, calm and collected, please allow me to disabuse you of such sentiments. I am a tightly wound ball of stress, regret, fatigue, worry, and neuroses. Art helps, and so does music, obviously. A little meditation goes a long way, too. But still the worst thing you can ask me is how I'm feeling. It's a mixed bag of things I'd rather not have to ponder or say. I'd rather think about anything other than me and how I’m doing.
I don't mind
"Gloria” - The Snuts
As far as the music is concerned, it's another lucky discovery thanks to the Spotify Algorithm. It showed up on my Discover Weekly, and I like it. What else can I say?
The art was a fun "little" experiment. For Christmas I was given a tiny sheet of dry transfer letters. And, when I say "tiny", I'm not kidding. I mean it.
It was a challenge to think about type layout and composition on so small a scale. It was even harder to try and photograph it. But, I like the restriction and the forced simplicity. I'm looking forward to working with it again.
just bring me home
"How Do You Know It’s Not Armadillo Shells?" - Hot Mulligan
I started listening to this band during last week's playlist and I haven't stopped yet. Honestly, it was everything I could do to keep myself from making a playlist of art based solely around Hot Mulligan.
This track appeals to me particularly. You may think I'm a good artist. You may say I'm a decent writer, but my one true talent, my one great gift, is introversion. My second favorite Marx said that he'd never join a club that would have him as a member, and that speaks to me. I've never made plans that I didn't relish canceling. I've never attended a party or gathering without calculating the polite amount of time I need to stay before I can leave. No matter where I am, no matter what I'm doing, I’m always thinking that "home" is the place I'd rather be.
Oh, lover
"Call me Out" - Sea Girls
Of all the songs I listened to this week, this is the one I replayed the most. Over and over. Again, and again. I feel sorry for anyone with ears to hear in my vicinity.
The world of books and art, poetry and music is made up of soul doctors. Individuals whose work, presence, and persistence help to soothe the burn of the world and our being in it. But there are people that come into your real life. Who meet you where you are when you least expect it. Who can move mountains in their own subtle ways. Who can find a way to reach far down into the valley of your lowest of days. People who can change everything by calling your name. Love is a great mystery. I may never understand it. I may never be able to say for sure what it is. But I know that it looks like this. May you be blessed enough to experience it.
Leave a comment with any songs you might like to see on next week’s playlist.
I love this idea!
