"The reason we get good reviews", Pelle Almqvist says, "is because we don't care what [people] think." He says that "It's important that you just kind of do what you do and be authentic."
The secret to Casey Neistat's filmmaking is that he doesn't care about the opinions of the viewer. He says that "the minute I stop trusting how [the work makes] me feel, and start looking to how [it makes] others feel...that's when you fail."
That's not apathy. That's not indifference. It's not the same as saying you care about nothing. It's not the same as saying you don't give a fuck about anything.
Instead, it's the implementation of a logistical fuck management system. It's efficient fuck distribution. It’s allocating the limited quantity of your fucks to only those areas that Mark Manson describes as "fuck worthy" and deserving.
Part of you job as a maker is deciding when they should be given. Where they should be allotted and dispersed. When they should be handed out, and where they should be reserved.
It's the work that matters. The way you do it, and how it makes you feel. It's trusting your intuition, welcoming your wonder, and following your curiosity. Aside from these, there are few, if any, other fucks to give.
P.S. - I made a video for my paid subscribers rambling through the thoughts that gave rise to this post. You can find the video here.
P.P.S. - ICAD Day 364 & 365 - well, I did it. An index card collage every day for a full year. I can’t thank
enough for introducing me to this challenge and this practice! So, the question is, what now? What next? What comes after all the time and effort that went into this?
See below, for the answer…
P.P.P.S. - ICAD Day 1 - The caveat is that this time around I won’t be extending the challenge. I’ll only be doing ICAD for the usual 61 days, after that…who knows? That’s a problem for another day.
'Worry is a way to pretend,' I've never looked at it that way before.
So excited to see that familiar face!
