There's no way around robbing Peter to pay Paul. More of one thing means less of something else.
You can't do everything. You can't have a horse in every race. You can't die on every hill. There's only so much time to go around. There's only so much of yourself to give away.
Stopping, quitting, pulling back, isn't a failure. It isn't giving up or giving in. It isn't defeat. It's a matter of priorities. It's curating first concerns. The pitiless elimination of what makes it harder for your heart to breathe.
You're no good to yourself or anyone else when you're outnumbered and overridden. “[T]he greatest act of good citizenship", Oliver Burkeman says, "may be learning to withdraw your attention from everything except the battles" you choose.
Retreat isn't surrender. It's strategy.
