I've got too much to say! Where do I start? Duane, thank you these collages you created out of the song title playlist are just amazing. I was not even thinking of the songs as much but the titles' words. They connected me to the final version. The fact that you compiled a playlist and wonderful art that sends my mind on a journey! Heat, flavour, memory lane, pain, joy and most of all dreams! A big bang. Thank you is not enough for the time and creation you've made. Thank you for having the Where did your heart go as the main one. Wham! Superstar work Duane, thank you!
The merging of music and art to creating something entirely new. Incredible college artistry. I love the freedom that index card inspiration provides for the immediate expression yet jumpstarts bigger creative ideas. Your cards are beautiful.
Thanks so much! Writer Pilgrim was an outstanding collaborator on this. His song title poem gave me so much to work with.
I totally agree about the index cards! It's becoming my new favorite format to work in. It's a frictionless form of creation that provides a kind of limitless liberation in its limited scale. I think its a practice I'll continue even after the challenge is done. Thanks again!
American comic artist and creativity whisperer has her students use index cards each day. She gave us drawing prompts at the Omega Institute. We drew with felt too markers.
Something about the constraint of the medium forces a brain to discern quicker. It must say, “How can I cut to the chase?”
That sounds amazing! Makes perfect sense! I've found that the way to get at more creative possibilities is to give yourself less options and more restrictions.
You’re welcome. I’ll have to check out Writer Pilgrim.
The index cards are a great challenge. In previous years, I’ve used the index cards inside a series up the ante by giving myself 5 mins time bursts. Using 5 supplies only - 5 index cards at a time. Start creating. Not thinking. Laying down the supplies watching how the art evolves and still has cohesiveness without being repetitive. More often than not hidden gems are found in those practice pieces. Happy creating!!
Love the way you approached the index card challenege! There's so much inspiration to be found by working within staunch restrictions. I don't give myself a time limit but I force myself to start with whatever scraps are already out on my desk. i may have to try a few of the methods you mentioned! Thank you!
A practice I picked up during an online art class several years ago. I love setting aside the short time bursts to create before starting on the main. Warm up pieces that become reference points. Helped me to avoid that “staring at a blank canvas, where do I start?”
The time crunch. Took some getting used to.
Enjoy your creative process and its resulting art.
Makes perfect sense! I don't necessarily give myself a specific amount of time, but I have a demanding day job and I'm a single parent so I'm always in a bit of a time crunch. I don't get large allotments of uninterupted creative time. I've adapted to working in short bursts and at small scales. Half an hour in the morning before work. Maybe another 20-30 minutes in the evening after I get home from the gym before dinner. Maybe an hour before bed. It all adds up if you're consistent and if you use it properly.
Most definitely. Those inspiring creative moments amongst precious family, work and self time. It's all grateful time that builds into consistency and process.
I usually prefer to collage in the quiet. There's something meditative about moving paper around in silence and otici g what happens with every move. Instead I listen to music when I'm at work or doing other things and I alsoways keep my notebook near by to make notes or jot down ideas that I can explore when I get back to the quiet of my workbench.
One of the benefits of being an only child is that I learned to be comfortable in the quiet of being alone from an early age, but it took me much longer to learn to be nourished by it, to learn how much I need it.
Doesn't it take a very long time to understand what we have, the gifts we are given? Instead we are made to feel inadequate for something we don't have. Sitting with silence is great if you want to create but silence can also be taboo and a sign of loneliness. I totally understand what you are saying and now I feel I can own silence and the quiet and turn it into a creative possibility.
It's like one of those things we can only see in reverse--how you learned to be good company, a good friend to yourself. That inner friendship is so beautiful. Some of the kindest, coolest people I know had a lot of solitude in childhood.
This “issue” I love the most—the writing, the collage and wow. What depth.

Emoji are tacky, but my feelings aren’t and I’d write you such a long reply that doesn’t need to be here—but definitely reviewed, consumed and lauded in an article.
Would it be okay to write an article about your Substack—with screencaps crediting your work I particularly loved?
Thanks so much! It’s annnoying isn’t it, that sometimes emojis can get at somethign you just can’t find the words to say, haha!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one. This was a great collaboration with @Writer Pilgrim by So Elite who put together such a clever poem! I had a lot of fun making art to accompany it.
Feel free to reference my work in an article! It would be an absolute honor! If you need anything please feel free to let me know!
Thank you! The index cards have been so much fun! They've really helped me build up so much creative momentum! 'waiting to wave' is one of my favorites too!

Now I'm thinking of writing poems featuring the titles of my favorite artists *noting to self*

When two insanely creative souls come together to make a Third Thing. Boom! 💥 It's magic.
What a lovely response! Thank you Ann!
So glad you like it! Pilgrim made this so easy for me, couldn't be happier with the result!
Such a great playlist! Were you listening to it while you were working with your collage materials?

I wish more people could learn to trust the warm bath of silence as an always-present safe space in which to work, or pray, or rest. Ora et labora. 🌿

“And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton but I know one thing…I love you.”
— borrowing from that XTC song but that’s what my brain was playing when I was possessed to do all those emoji.
LMAO!! Perfection! Good song choice!
I may want to interview you.
Sounds like fun.
Also the index cards, 'waiting to wave' love it!
