Someone sees something. A flash of perception. A moment of recognition. A feeling they’ve always known, but could never say. It could be the motion of a spinning planet. It could be the sound and taste of their own name. The sense that for once in their life they recognize who they’ve always been and who they still could be. And, in that same instant, in some part of it, it also points out some part of you.
There’s something about finding realization and recognition in letters, words and sentences. There's something about feeling seen in colors, and textures, and images. In sound and music. In tones and timbres. Something that almost seems magical. Once in a lifetime, even. It is, and it isn't. That's the magical thing. That it is so extraordinary and also the most ordinary of things.
There’s only ever been a single impetus. Only one really. For all creating, and artistry. The task, Malcolm Gladwell says, is “to make something that reflects what you care about and how you like to see the world.” To see something a little left of center. To notice something askew, to find a part of yourself in it, something that makes sense of it, somehow, someway. And then to give it to someone else to view.
P.S. ICAD - 58-61 - Well here we are, the end of another ICAD. But to me it feels like only one. Instead of only doing 61 days last year, I did 365 and came full circle to the the 61 days of this year’s ICAD. Technically it ends tomorrow but I wanted to include the final collage here. It’s been a terrific journey, but I won’t be continuing with it for another full year. I’ll keep doing some index cards here and there because I like the small format but I think I’m going to take the opportunity to slow down a bit. Thanks for coming along on the journey with me.
As usual most collages are available for purchase at my shop here.
P.P.S. - There’s going to be an exhibit of my work at the Bowling Green State University in Ohio thanks to my friend Stephan Tomasko (IG here).
I made a video for my Paid Subs showing all the collages that will be featured in the show. You can find it here.
Here’s a copy of the announcement with my artist statement for the exhibit.
Eeek! Congrats on your show!!! Makes me nervous because I think you might sell out and I love all your pieces. And want them. Lucky for me, you are wildly prolific 😊
Thanks for being so consistent with your art
It's habit-forming
Amen to all this! And exciting about a show, wooooo! 🎉🎉🎉
You also reminded of a wonderful joke from Tim Vine: "I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I'll tell you what, never again."
