I don't think about AI much. Not because I'm out right opposed to it. Or because it has no potential uses. But, because I'm not interested. Because I don't trust it.
I like paper and imperfection. I like materials that have to be handled. Things that are tactile. I like torn edges and crinkles. Paint splatter and spills. Things that can go wrong. That are unpredictable. Things that don't turn out the way you think they will. But most of all, I like to do it myself. I like to be the one making all the errors and blunders. I like to be the one mis-stepping the whole way through it.
Grayson Perry says that he's "a quality control freak." He says that he has to "do it badly in the right way." He "can't trust anybody else to make the right sort of mistakes".
No one else but me can fuck it up in the same way I can. No one can make the mistakes that I do. No one can make a mess as beautiful as I will.
You have to look at your work "with different eyes",
says. You "have to forget everyone", and everything, that can "do it better or faster, and remind [yourself ] that no one" could ever do it like youThere may be software that can generate writing and artwork that are passable. That are correct in a technical sense. But it's "The very 'wrongness'" of the things we create that make them memorable",
says. That's what makes them unique. That's what testifies to the fact that it was made by you.Because Art is you. It's us. It's living proof of what we've done. What we're doing. The mistakes we've made. The things we've learned and are still learning. It's what we got wrong. It's how we made it work. It's frustration and struggle and joy and acceptance and excitement and monotony. It's how far we've come. It's the simple truth of the fact that we were here. Take away that and it's "just...content"
says. Take away that and there's nothing left. Take away that and there's nothing else.
One person's "mess" might just be another person's "magic." Keep playing!
