Well-said, Duane. Hope to me is that sliver of expectation that somehow reflects the smallest point of light against all logic and reason. What is the source of the point of light? Ego? A Diety? Desire for outcome(s)? Still not sure.
Neil! I love this imagery so much! Such an incredible and insightful perspective. Hope holds a mirror to these small slivers. Reflects them. Amplifies them. Makes them bigger. Chases away the dark with something smaller than we ever expected. It only takes a little.
“what is the source of the point of light” Jacques Derrida said that “I rightly pass as an atheist”, but he also described himself as a man of prayer. At a conference someone asked him to whom, or to what did he pray then? Derrida said “If I knew that, I would know everything”…
Duane, I hear the paradox of how heaven and hell are both here on earth all at once, intertwined. Especially now, the struggle is continual. Nothing is certain. It feels urgent to practice constant attuning and tending. Hope has that energy—the radical defiance--of seeing every day as a new moment with potential for something good to emerge. Thanks for the work you're doing. It's full of hopeful, creative spirit.
This feels so precise! We do need “constant attuning and tending”, persistent attention and awareness, and practices that allow us space to do it. Perhaps this is what makes art, and good books, and contemplation not only important but unavoidably necessary. Thanks so much!
