Interesting article and quality work. “It's no wonder then that Brian Eno says that "the only product of art is feelings". The result of the outer world internalized, interpreted, and made manifest again.” Random thought—but it struck me how this feels like the opposite of being haunted, or having a ghostly experience, where it’s the internal feeling - typically fear—that becomes externalised and made manifest in the form of a ‘ghost’.
The Radical Proposal is a wonderful image! I’m newer to Substack and have been enjoying seeing your work. Do you ever offer collage challenges for other artists to join in?
Thanks so much! Welcome! Glad you found your way here. I appreciate the kind words. I haven’t offered any challenges before. I’ve toyed with teh idea here and there, but I’ve never quite come up with a good one yet.
That quote from Brian Eno is excellent as is how you describe art as the "result of the outer world internalized, interpreted, and made manifest again." Well put!
Thank you so much Manuela! I'm really glad to hear you liked that one. It's an unexpected direction that I'm happy to have stumbled on. I've been staining a lot of papers lately and I wanted to try to expand their usage. Also, I've been desperately wanting to find a way to incorporate my typewriter into my collages. Definitely want to play with this format more. Thanks again!
Collage turns all those feelings into something easier to bear. It helps digest discomfort in the process. 🙂
Yes! Something tangible that you can start to reshape.

Great perspective there! It’s something ethereal made tangible. Almost incarnational, where mood is given bone.

Thanks Neil! Such a great quote! That one line was the inspiration for the entire newsletter.
"The radical proposal" is stunning!! Maybe one of my personal favorites ever.
And then this sentence "But to turn them into something different than they were before.", that's what art is all about.
